Five common meanings
Read the full vacancy rather than relying on the remote label.
- Home-based: normally performed from an approved home location
- Hybrid: regular workplace attendance is still required
- Remote control room: equipment is distant, but the operator works at a specialist facility
- Field-remote: technology is operated away from the asset while the worker travels to sites
- Remote within a country or region: residence is restricted for tax, payroll, regulation or customer reasons
Questions to answer before applying
Find out where you may live, whether travel is required, who supplies equipment, normal meeting hours, time-zone expectations and whether the role is employment or contracting.
Why location restrictions matter
Employers may be unable to employ someone in another country because of payroll, tax, insurance, export control, security or licensing requirements. Hiding your location can create serious problems later.
Control-room careers are still remote careers
In robotics, energy, transport and subsea work, the operator may be far from the machine without working from home. These roles can still reduce exposure to dangerous or uncomfortable environments and create new career routes.
